TIME ESTIMATE

How Long Does ZIP Password Recovery Take?

There is no universal timer. A realistic estimate starts with the number of candidates and the archive's verification cost, then accounts for hardware, interruptions, and the chance that the remembered password pattern is wrong.

The variables that matter

ZipCrypto and WinZip AES have different verification costs and different shortcuts. A known-plaintext route may be much smaller than a password search, while AES requires candidates that pass authentication. The same password list can therefore take very different amounts of time across formats.

Candidate count is only useful when the list is based on real clues. A broad list with no connection to the original password can run for a long time and still provide no evidence that recovery is progressing.

Wrong assumptions

Measure a sample, then extrapolate

A local tool or service can benchmark a small representative sample using the same archive and verification mode. Treat the result as an engineering estimate, not a promise: thermal throttling, queue time, rules, and false candidates can change the outcome.

If the sample is not representative of your candidate plan, its number is decoration. Ask what is included in the measurement and whether the final answer is verified by extraction.

When to stop

Stop expanding the search when the remaining candidates are no longer supported by evidence. A backup, password manager, or message from the creator may improve the odds more than another hardware upgrade.

Time does not create entropy

Running an unbounded search longer does not make a random password more likely to be found. Revisit the clues and archive diagnosis instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long will a forgotten ZIP password take?
It can range from a short focused test to an impractical search. Encryption, candidate count, hardware, and whether your clues match the original password determine the estimate.
Are GPU speed claims reliable?
Only as measurements under stated conditions. Speeds vary by implementation, GPU, verification mode, and thermal or queue limits, so they should not be presented as a guaranteed recovery time.
Does a faster computer guarantee recovery?
No. Hardware tests candidates faster, but it cannot help if the original password is absent from the candidate set or the archive is damaged.

Need a second opinion on your archive?

Run the free local analyzer first. If the archive is healthy and you are authorized to recover it, you can compare the evidence with a specialist's supported workflow.
